It is with excitement that I watched CSPAN this afternoon for the historic vote on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. I shared this moment via the telephone with a former student and we both were speechless at this historic moment. With the 65-31 vote in the Senate and a repeal vote earlier in the House, the bill now goes to President Obama for his signature.
It takes courage to stand above discrimination. It takes leadership to push this legislation forward. I appreciatePresident Barak Obama’s determination to fulfill his promise to end Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy. Today, we have seen the hard work of his leadership and many, many, many military leaders, Senators and Congressmen who pushed for equal treatment of the LGBT community.
The removal of this policy brings the LGBT community closer to full citizenship today. And while there are other major legal battles such as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and Marriage Equality, each victory creates a safer environment for the LGBT community.
Today, I stand proud again to be an American because America has opened another door for equal treatment.
You forgot to mention I almost deafened you when I screamed – before I went speechless. I was so glad to share the moment with you. It was amazing.
