Yesterday, my colleague Jessie Sell and I facilitated a social justice training, “Empowering Social Justice Advocates” for students at Penn State University. It was an amazing and moving experience. Spending six hours in training with college students on a Saturday talks about their commitment and an interest in change.
After several months of planning, it was amazing to watch 23 students explore social justice, dialogue on difficult and personal issues, stretch their comfort zones, and grow from this experience. For many students, this was their first opportunity for a social justice training. Building a safe space for dialogue created great opportunities for students to build trust, honesty, and openness with their peers.
While this is a first step for many of the students, it is my hope that they will continue the energy established yesterday, feel empowered, network with other students, and continue their social justice advocacy.
Best wishes to the Penn State students and the staff of the LGBTA Student Resource Center.
