Bruce E. Smail, Keynote Address - Penn State University - March 2011
As an Independent Consultant, I speak, train, consult, and research social justice, diversity, HIV/AIDS, and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Questioning) issues. My advocacy is based on social justice and multiple dimensions of identity research. Both provide key perspectives in my consulting efforts. In basing my work in this research, I am able to 1) address many aspects of diversity; 2) provide critical analysis of individual, organizational, and societal aspects of prejudice, oppression, and targeted/privilege status; and 3) affect change in the status quo.
Social justice focuses on breaking the cycle of oppression in race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, physical/psychological/developmental disability, class, and age. Multiple dimensions of identity seeks to understand the interconnections of these dimensions. Finding that space where all groups can understand and create safer environments to involve, appreciate, and value all individuals within your organization is the essential change that Smail Consulting seeks to accomplish with every client.
My expertise is targeted to businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, higher education, school systems, faith-based organizations, community organizations and anyone else desiring assistance in developing more inclusive environments.
