Bruce E. Smail is a social justice advocate. He has served students of color, LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) students, and people living with HIV/AIDS. With over 20 years of professional experience, Smail’s career in higher education as well as his knowledge and experience in diversity, social justice, and HIV/AIDS provide unique perspectives to organizations.
Most recently, Smail served as Chief Executive Office & Founder of Social Justice Consultants, LLC (January 2009 – December 2010) and Chief Executive Officer of the Virgin Islands Community AIDS Resource & Education, Inc. (September 2005 – September 2008). The opportunity to lead the largest HIV/AIDS organization on islands that are silent around sexuality and HIV/AIDS issues provided interesting challenges as well as opportunities to draw upon numerous skills honed throughout his career in higher education, federal government, non-profit and secondary education. Smail also held diversity positions at University of Colorado, Indiana University, Southwestern University, Colorado State University, and Boston University.
As a bisexual, person of color, living with HIV, and raised in the Caribbean, Smail has been passionate about addressing multiple dimensions of identity and finding ways to value all parts of one’s identity. Furthermore, he advocates for silenced voices in organizations and creates spaces for those voices to emerge. Smail strongly believes that the issue of HIV/AIDS is complex and must address the multiple layers of culture, sexuality, and sexual identity to be effective in reducing the spread of HIV.
